The Sand Trap has a post up that’s a rare kind indeed, one savaging Jack Nicklaus and, it would seem, hoping the PGA punishes Nicklaus’s transgressions by contracting his tournament.

The story is wholly unconvincing. It basically pillories Nicklaus for having an ego, disagreeing with Tim Finchem, liking things better in his prime (which is something all of us do, it’s part of the human condition…the writer will be no exception in his twilight, I am sure), and rubbing people the wrong way 20 years ago.

In other news, S.K. Ho and Ryuichi Oda fired 63’s and share the first round lead in Japan’s Classic Sendai, and play is underway at the Celtic Manor Wales Open. Players are still on the course, but the clubhouse leaders, at 6 under, are Miguel Angel Jimenez, David Lynn, James Heath, and Gary Emerson. Play has juuuuust started at The Memorial as I write this, and Sean O’Hair has birdied two of the first three holes.
